Fix That Miscat! is a series of articles aimed at explaining the differences between the galleries that are commonly confused or abused in the category system here on deviantART.

Today we will be covering two galleries that are also commonly mixed and confused:

Manga and Anime vs. Fan Art

  • Fan art includes those artworks that are based on or contain material such as characters, settings, concepts or universes in general that are copyrighted to someone else other than the artist creating said Fan artwork. According to aunjuli "Fan Art is a way to show appreciation for someone else's creation.The root of it all is love, gratitude, and the desire to create more than what was originally handed to you."
  • Fan Art comes in many styles, including but not limitted to Manga & Anime.
  • Manga, on the other side, is a defined style of art with very characteristic traits to it. It's also referred to sequential art that tells a story and it usually comes in black and white colours. When manga artworks are put in motion, as a movie clip, we are talking about Anime /Animation/.
  • The manga style can be applied to both original or fan artworks. The difference lies in the content of your piece.

How do I know whether my artwork belongs in Manga&Anime or Fan Art...?

Just ask yourself these simple questions!
  1. Is my work entirely created by me and not related to any pre-existing copyrighted universe...?
  • Yes -------------------------------------- Manga & Anime
  • No --------------------------------------- 2
2. Does my work contain characters, settings, concepts or universes that are copyrighted to someone else that I have official permission to use?
  • Yes -------------------------------------- Manga & Anime || Fan Art - Your choice.
  • No --------------------------------------- Fan Art

Summary:

When your artwork contains copyrighted material that you DON'T have official permission to use {Ie. Characters from an Anime show, your Fan characters belonging to a pre-existing universe /Naruto Ocs/...} it belongs in the Fan Art > Manga and Anime gallery.

When your artwork contains copyrighted material but you DO have permission to use it {Ie. you are hired by the copyright holder, your friend gives you permission to draw their OC...} then you can choose whether you want to categorize your work as Fan Art > Manga and Anime or directly as Manga & Anime [root gallery].

When your artwork contains material that you have created from scratch and it is in no way related to any pre-existing universe, then it belongs in the Manga and Anime root gallery.
